I quit drinking 2 months ago. I had been drinking heavily for about 2 years; about 1/2 a bottle of tequila per night. Upon quitting drinking, I experienced the expected insomnia, but what also started happening at the same time was diarrhea. I read online that diarrhea is a common experience for people who quit drinking, so I hoped it would go away after a few weeks. It didn t go away. So after 6 weeks, I went to see a doctor and told her about the persistent diarrhea and extreme exhaustion (I can sleep for 10-12 hours and still be tired). She first suggested an ultrasound of my abdominal area, but after listening to the area with her stethoscope, she recommended a round of antibiotics first (because she heard a lot of activity in my abdomen and a stomach virus has been going around in recent months). I didn t think it was a stomach virus (because I did have a fever and there was no vomiting), but I took the antibiotic anyway (Cipro, over 10 days). The diarrhea has not improved and I m as exhausted as I have ever been. I don t have insurance, so my primary concern is that I will waste my money on an ultrasound? What can the ultrasound reveal? Are there some other tests that I should suggest my doctor put me through?
